BERNA WATCH COMPANY "HOLY GRAIL" YACHTING REGATTA 5 DOTS COUNTDOWN YACHT TIMER
For sale is rare Berna Watch Company Yachting countdown timer.  I did a quick internet search for BERNA YACHTING TIMER and found this watch referred to as the holy grail of yachting timers.  Frankly, I don't know the value, so please send your offers!  A similar (later) Dimier branded similar watch recently sold here on ebay in the $1000-1500 range (it was a best offer listing, so I cannot deduce the actual sell price).  Apparently, the Berna is the holy grail, being the company that first patented the 5 dot countdown timer design in 1914.  The timer is clean, working well, and running strong.  Pressing down on the crown resets the 5 dots, and resets the sweep second hand to 60.  The dots slowly turn to white color (one for each elapsed minute) and the watch stops shortly after the 5 minutes have elapsed (usually around 15 seconds afterwards.  Press down on the crown and the 5 dots reset, sweep hand resets to 60, and the countdown timer starts again.  The dial is in good condition which some minor marks and typical patina, but no major damage (see photos).  Crystal is thick glass with a few light scratches but no major damage.  I would have replaced the crystal with a new one if I had the correct size (which I did not, as the crystal is quite large and not a common size).  Case is overall nice with an apparent repair dent on the back which still shows a slight indentation and some waviness where the dent was apparently repaired (center bottom half between the center and cashback hinge).  Tried to photo this, but it was very difficult to show in photos.  Case is silver in color but I do not know the material content or whether it's solid silver or not, as it is not marked with any details of the silver content. Inside of outer caseback is marked Berna Watch Co. Swiss in a circular emblem.  Inner dust cover is marked with serial number 3168169.  Movement is marked Berna Watch Co. Swiss, Six 6 Jewels, Adjusted 2 Two Position, Brevet + No. 65942.  This patent number matches the original 1914 patent issued to Berna for the totalizer (5 dots countdown) invention.  Mainspring is good.  Timer is running accurately.  Main part of case measures 58.4 mm in diameter (rather large).  With the pendant bow, the timer measures 84 mm long.  Aside from the online webpage/article that refers to this timer as a the holy grail, I could not find another Berna marked example anywhere.  Of course, I am not quite an expert in the yachting timer field, so feel free to ask question or provide any insight to me if you desire.  GENERAL AUCTION TERMSPlease accept our apologies for the extensive term and conditions for our auction.
