Rare and early Julien Le Roy Onion ¼ Repeater Paris 1715 verge fusee silver. Absolutely rare and large oignon pocket watch with verge escapement, silver case and ¼ repeater on bell of the great French watchmaker Julien Le Roy, clockmaker of the French king Louis XV, from the period around 1715. Diameter 58mm, weight 204g. Superb silver case, smooth, on the back with very fine sawn sound holes. The case is in very nice condition. Enamelled dial with Roman numerals in arched cartridges. Outside Arabic minute digits. Two fine original gold hands. Dial at the keyhole with a small chip, otherwice in very good condition. Gilded, very high full plate movement with verge escapement, chain and fusee. Magnificent, silvered movement pillars. Repetition with hammer on bell with excellent, very clean sound. Movement with watchmakers brand. Blued screws. Fine sawn and engraved balance cock with raptor heads and decoration. Blued screws. Engraved regulator disc. London 1978, page 195: Julien Le Roy(1686-1759) was a major 18th-century Parisian clockmaker and watchmaker. He was born in Tours in 1686, and by the age of 13, had already made his first clock. In 1699, he moved to Paris for further training. He became maitre horloger in 1713 and later juré of his guild. Further appointments followed, including the Directorship of the Société des Arts, but the pinnacle of his achievement was being appointed clockmaker (Horloger Ordinaire du Roi) to King Louis XV in 1739. 1732 he invented the ‘Répétition à Toc’, where the hammer of the repeater movement strikes on the watch case. 1740 he rearranges the repeater mechanism. Latter improvement exhibited as engraving on the ridge of the typically thick dial plates: ‘Inventé par Julien LeRoy 1740′. Le Roy also used the chain driven repeating mechanism ‘all or nothing’, which invention is attributed to him. Le Roy also introduced the adjustable bracket for the verge escapement wheel called ‘potence’. Prächtige, versilberte Werkspfeiler. Schlagwerk auf Glocke mit exzellentem, sehr sattem, sauberem Klang. Werk mit Uhrmachermarke. Gebläute Schrauben. Er präsentierte 1717 in der Académie Royale des Sciences eine Äquationsuhr und wurde 1739 königlicher Hofuhrmacher mit eignenen Räumen im Louvre. Er entwickelte den verstellbaren Kloben für das Hem mrad bei Spindeluhren ("potence"), den Repetitionsschlag der Taschenuhren auf Federn statt Glocken oder die "Alles-oder-nichts-Sicherung bei Repetitionsschlagwerken. Seine Erfindungen und Verbesserungen waren von so weitreichender Bedeutung, dass viele Uhrmacher sie sofort in ihre Uhren übernahmen. Julien Le Roy war Direktor der "Société des Arts" und lieferte zusammen mit seinem Sohn die Beiträge über Uhren für die Encyclopédie von Diderot und d'Alembert .
