| ► INTRO Thomas Russell & Son, one of the largest and most famous Liverpool watchmakers of the period, this being a relatively early keyless watch by the firm. These center-seconds watches with a balance brake, often inappropriately called 'chronographs,' allow the watch to be set and started to time, to the second, from a master time source such as a longcase clock. This is a convenience that nearly all watches do not have, including chronometers. This particular watch dates to 1884, indicated by the Date Letter Mark stamped inside the covers, along with the Chester Assay office mark and gold seals. The hunter case is remarkably heavy, with a total gold content of 60 grams. The unique watch number 77272 is repeated on the dial, case and movement. Its overall condition after more than 130 years is absolutely exceptional, with no major imperfections to the case, dial or movement, only slight evidence of age. This is one of the rarest a breath taking watches we've had in a long time, definitely a timepiece well worth among the best collections and museums. ► CASE Authentic Tho.
